Guimarães, Braga, Porto and the Douro Region

The city of Guimarães is located in the northwest of Portugal, 40 minutes from Porto international airport. It is one of the most important historic cities in the country, having been declared a World Heritage Site in 2001 by UNESCO. Its many monuments and impressive historic center are associated with a past in which the city played a fundamental role in Portuguese history as the cradle of the nation.

Guimarães is known as the “Cradle-City”, due to the fact that it was here that the administrative centre of the County of Portugal (Condado Portucalense) was founded by D. Henrique. His son, D. Afonso Henriques is thought to have been born in Guimarães. Another historical event of importance was the Battle of São Mamede, which happened outside the city on the 24th of June 1128, an event that helped shape the concept of Portuguese nationality..

The “Vimaranenses” [denonym for those who come from Guimarães] are the fruit of this historical conquest that began, precisely, in Guimarães.

The city of Braga, located in the north of Portugal, in the Cávado Valley, at 17km from Guimarães, is one of the youngest cities in Europe (considered the youngest city in Europe in 1989), making it a dynamic and energetic city.

Braga was the first Portuguese city, i.e. when Portugal as a country was constituted, in its territories there was only one city, Braga. It is one of the oldest Portuguese cities, founded in Roman times, under the name of Bracara Augusta, it boasts over 2000 years of history as a city. It is also one of the oldest Christian cities in the world. Remains of settlement in Braga date back thousands of years, certified as belonging to the Bronze Age.

Thus, the history of Braga can be divided in three periods: pre-history, Bracara Augusta and Braga.

The center of Porto was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. With its winemaking tradition, magnificent Baroque architecture, distinctive local cuisine and stunning scenery, this city has an abundance of culture. Porto has been awarded the Best Destination in Europe for four consecutive years, since 2017.

The Douro Valley is a region located in the North of Portugal, where the production of Port Wine and the unique scenery carved by the Douro River is one of the most breathtaking landscapes in Portugal. In addition to wine, this region is also known for its high-quality olive oil and almond trees, which fill the valley with colour.
